Authentication using SAML

I have read about SAMLand WIF and most of the articles says about authorization.

Where can I read about authenticaion using SAML protocol.

ie, giving a username and password to the provider and the third party Provider will validate the username and password and giving back the status to the relying application.and the relying application will showing the status to the user.

any samples?
