Drawing API in Windows Runtime?

Huh. Three years later, and as near as I can tell there still is no mechanism for custom controls to completely take over rendering, in the spirit of WPF's OnRender() override or its GetVisualChild()/VisualChildCount overrides (either work fine in WPF, are completely unavailable in WinRT).

This, in spite of numerous and clear feedback from the developer community that such a feature is necessary!

Well, add my vote to the long list of folks who want something more than a glorified version of UserControls (as the templated controls feature seems to be).
