CHOOSE function not working in trigger

even though it says SQL Server 2012 when I bring up the tools

"Who" says it's SQL Server 2012? Do you mean the splash screen, when you start SSMS? Then it's just the version of SSMS (tool), but important is the version of the SQL Server you are connected to.
