Opening documents in Word viewer

According to your description, my understanding is that you cannot open documents in Office Word client application from SharePoint when browsing the site in IE.

Was there any error opening the document in IE?

I recommend to check if the SharePoint OpenDocuments Class Add-On is enabled in IE. If not, enable it to see if the issue still occurs.

Please go to IE > Manage add-ons > check the SharePoint OpenDocuments Class Add-On.

Which version of IE did you use?

Please check if the Allow background open of web pages feature is disabled in IE.
